COLOMBO (News 1st): Two inmates have died following a clash between two groups of prisoners at the Negombo Prison.
Director of the Negombo Hospital Pushpa Gamlath said that 30 inmates who were injured were admitted to the hospital.
The Director added that 10 of the injured inmates had to undergo surgery.
She added that two inmates are in critical condition and have been transferred to the National Hospital in Colombo for further treatment.
The clash between the two groups occurred this afternoon.
According to Police, the Police Special Task Force (STF) was also deployed to control the situation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the conflict had erupted between a group supporting drug trafficking activities and a group opposing it.
Police said that a special security plan is in operation to ensure security outside the prison premises.
