Rising Elderly Population Sees Increase in Dementia Cases

COLOMBO (News 1st) -  Psychiatric specialist Dr. Rumi Ruben says that the rapid growth of the elderly population is leading to a rise in reported cases of Dementia.

He noted that Sri Lanka is recording Dementia cases at a rate similar to global statistics.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ruben stated that a significant number of patients in the country are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. 

Dr. Ruben said, there are several forms of Dementia. One such is the Alzheimer’s disease. 

He said, it is difficult to completely recover patients from the disease, however, treatments can be done to stop the development of the disease further. 

However, Psychiatric specialist, Dr. Ruben urged that it is vital to carry out tests to identify the disease in early stages and carry out treatments for the disease at early stages accordingly.
