COLOMBO (News 1st); The Negombo Magistrate's Court sentenced ten Iranian nationals to life imprisonment.

The verdict was delivered by High Court Judge Pamila Ratnayake.

The sentencing follows the arrest of 17 individuals in April 2016 near the waters off Galle, where they were apprehended with a large quantity of narcotics.

Of the 17 arrested, ten individuals admitted their guilt and were subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

The remaining seven will continue to face legal proceedings.

The suspects were detained by the Navy after their boat encountered difficulties near Galle.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered 146 kilograms of a substance suspected to be narcotics. Further investigations revealed that the substance included 48 kilograms of heroin.
