Strong Wind Alert Issued for Six Provinces as Severe Weather Threat Looms

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber Advisory for strong winds affecting several provinces and the Trincomalee District as active southwest monsoon conditions continue to influence the island.

According to the advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, strong winds of approximately 40 to 50 kilometres per hour can be expected at times in the North Central, North Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern Provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District.

Authorities warned that the prevailing weather conditions could result in damage to roof tiles and roofing sheets, disruptions to power and communication lines, and the breaking of tree branches as well as the uprooting of large avenue trees.

The advisory further noted the possibility of damage to paddy fields, banana and papaya cultivations, orchards, and harbour yachts.

There is also a risk of seawater inundation in low-lying coastal areas.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to remain vigilant for hazards arising from damaged roofs, fallen trees, and downed power lines.

Residents have been advised to stay alert to the evolving weather situation and seek assistance from local disaster management authorities in the event of emergencies.

The public has also been requested to closely follow future advisories and updates issued by the Department of Meteorology.
