Security Lockdown Continues at Mahara Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st); Security measures around the Mahara Prison continue to remain in force, Police said.

Police Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler stated that officers of the Police Special Task Force (STF), the Police, and several other specialised police units have been deployed to strengthen security at the prison.

Meanwhile, the Department of Prisons announced that visitors will not be allowed to meet inmates at Mahara Prison today and tomorrow.

The Department said the decision was taken due to damage caused to the visitors’ meeting area.

Amid unrest that erupted among a group of inmates, 104 prisoners from Mahara Prison have been transferred to other prisons across the country.

Accordingly, the inmates have been relocated to the Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Polonnaruwa, and Batticaloa prisons.

A list containing the names of the transferred inmates has been displayed near the roadblock at the entrance to Mahara Prison.

The developments follow a clash that occurred at Mahara Prison two days ago, resulting in the death of an inmate.

The deceased was identified as a 33-year-old prisoner.

Eight individuals who sustained injuries in the incident are currently receiving treatment at the Ragama Teaching Hospital.
