Heavy Rainfall Over 100mm Forecast Across Several Provinces Today

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Meteorology says that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres is likely in many areas across the in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, Northern, North Central, and Eastern provinces today. 

According to the MET Department the atmospheric disturbance over the island may develop into a low-pressure area by tomorrow, and as a result, rainy conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.

Director of the Forecasting Division at the Department of Meteorology, Meryl Mendis, made these remarks in an exclusive discussion with Newsfirst.

Meanwhile, landslide early warnings have been issued for several divisional secretariats in the Badulla and Monaragala districts.

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) said that Level 1 landslide warnings have been issued for Passara in Badulla District, and Badalkumbura and Wellawaya in Monaragala District.

In addition, several major reservoirs including Rajanganaya, Lunugamwehera, Wewelgala, Deduru Oya, Ali Kotara, Tissa Wewa, Weerawila, and Ambewela are currently overflowing.

Director of the Water Management Unit, P.S.D. Herath, said that four additional medium-scale reservoirs are also overflowing at present.
