COLOMBO (News 1st) - Four schools in the Deniyaya Education Zone will remain closed tomorrow(11)and the day after(12) due to the spread of a viral illness, Governor of the Southern Province Susiripala Manawadu said.
The decision was taken following a telephone discussion between the Southern Province Governor and provincial health authorities.
Authorities stated the measure was taken to raise public awareness on maintaining proper hygiene and sanitation, while allowing time for the disinfection of school premises and equipment.
Accordingly, students of Deniyaya National School, Deniyaya Saint Matthew's Bilingual School, Deniyaya Rajapaksa Vidyalaya and the Siddhartha Primary School in Pallegama will remain closed in the upcoming two days.
Meanwhile, Deputy Health Minister Hansaka Wijemuni says steps have been taken to clean water sources in an effort to control the spread of the viral fever in Deniyaya.
He further stated that there is currently no risk of the disease spreading and urged the public not to panic unnecessarily.
