COLOMBO (News 1st); The investigation into the death of Kapila Chandrasena, the former Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lankan Airlines, has been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
Police said that the post-mortem examination is being conducted.
The body of Kapila Chandrasena was discovered yesterday morning at a relative's house located along 5th Lane, Kollupitiya
Former CEO of SriLankan Airlines Kapila Chandrasena was accused of accepting a bribe of $2 million during the deal to purchase Airbus aircraft for the airline in 2013.
After being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Chandrasena was remanded in custody and subsequently released on bail on the 5th of this month by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The bail conditions included a cash bond of Rs. 500,000 and three personal surety bonds of Rs. 10 million each.
Subsequent investigations following his release on bail revealed that two individuals had been presented as sureties for two of the Rs. 10 million personal bonds after paying Rs. 15,000 each to obtain their services.
The Commission then requested court permission to suspend the suspect’s bail, stating that he had violated the bail conditions and breached the trust of the court. The Commission also requested that he be remanded until the conclusion of the case under the Anti-Corruption Act.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama had ordered that Kapila Chandrasena be arrested and produced before court and further directed that the warrant be executed without delay.
Kapila Chandrasena was found dead while arrangements were underway to arrest him in terms of the court order.
