COLOMBO (News 1st); Ilavalai Police in Jaffna have arrested Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archchuna, police said.

Acting Police Spokesman, Police Superintendent Minura Senaviratne, stated that the arrest was made on charges of criminal intimidation and verbal threats under the Firearms Ordinance.

The MP was taken into custody this (27) morning when he arrived at the Ilavalai Police Station to provide a statement in connection with an incident in which a woman was allegedly threatened using a firearm.

A video circulating on social media shows the parliamentarian allegedly threatening a woman by displaying a firearm during an argument over a land dispute.

Police said the arrest followed investigations initiated based on a complaint lodged by the woman concerned at the Ilavalai Police Station.

Ramanathan Archchuna is due to be produced before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court today.
