Labour Officer Sentenced to Six Years for Accepting Rs. 15,000 Bribe

COLOMBO (News 1st): A Labour Officer has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs. 15,000 from a poultry farm businessman in Weerasekaragama, Wellawaya.

The conviction relates to a written complaint received on September 2, 2009, and was heard before the High Court.

The accused, a Labour Officer attached to the Haputale Labour Office, was found guilty on all three charges brought against him.

High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail ruled that the sentences for each charge will run concurrently, resulting in a total prison term of six years. 

In addition, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 for each charge, along with an additional penalty equivalent to the Rs. 15,000 bribe amount received.
