Veteran Writer Tennyson Perera Passes Away

COLOMBO (News 1st0 - Veteran writer Tennyson Perera has passed away at the age of 86. He passed away yesterday morning following a prolonged illness.

Tennyson Perera, born on February 2, 1940, in Kotikawatta, authored over a hundred books during his lifetime. 

His writing often served as a tool for social reform, challenging injustice and inequality. 

Critics regard him as a pioneer who introduced a distinct literary style to Sri Lanka through his short stories, novels, and translations. 

He was the recipient of the State Literary Award for Best Short Story Collection for his book 'Asirimath Wedabima.'

Among his notable works are Bhawantaranaya, Abhirahas Jeewitha Tharanaya, Arabi Nisollasaya, Maha Ravana, and Sakwala Dadayama. 

In 1967, his book 'Dethirodeen Upan Budun' faced censorship, and is widely considered the first book to be banned in the country.

The mortal remains of the late Tennyson Perera will lie in state at a private funeral parlor in Thalahena from 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Final rites will be performed at the Kotikawatta General Cemetery on April 27.
