Sajith Is An Ineffective Opposition Leader, Says Joint Opp

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Joint Opposition today claimed that the parliamentary opposition led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa is failing to fulfil the role expected by the public.

Representatives of the group further alleged that a lack of confidence in Premadasa also exists among opposition MPs themselves.

The remarks were made during a media briefing held this afternoon at the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Mandiraya in Colombo, where representatives of several political and civil organizations outlined their concerns regarding the current opposition's performance.

Democratic National Alliance leader Praba Ganesan questioned the Opposition Leader's political consistency, claiming that Sajith Premadasa had previously pledged not to work with individuals accused of corruption or those blamed for the country's decline, but was now engaging with figures such as Namal Rajapaksa and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Ganesan further alleged that political figures including Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila and Duminda Dissanayake continue to influence opposition politics and argued that Premadasa's credibility had been weakened as a result. He also claimed that some Tamil-speaking opposition politicians had begun engaging directly with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake due to a lack of confidence in the Opposition Leader and were exploring alternative political alliances.

United Young Entrepreneurs' Organization Chairman Vimukthi Jayasuriya said former political leaders who had governed the country for years could not now position themselves solely as critics of the government. He argued that the country had demanded a new political culture following the Aragalaya movement and claimed that many individuals currently facing investigations, legal scrutiny or allegations of wrongdoing were concerned about the strengthening of law enforcement and the rule of law.

Jayasuriya further alleged that the parliamentary opposition had effectively collapsed and claimed that dissatisfaction with the Opposition Leader existed even among opposition MPs. He described the current opposition as fragmented and driven more by shared political concerns than by a common vision for the country.

Democratic National Organization National Organiser Niruksha Kumara argued that a strong opposition had failed to emerge because many of the political groups within it were linked to parties and families that had governed the country for decades. He claimed that several opposition leaders were either under investigation, facing court proceedings, indictments, or cases before institutions such as the Criminal Investigation Department and the Bribery Commission, leaving them focused on their own legal challenges rather than public issues.

Kumara further asserted that these circumstances had reduced the opposition's ability to present itself as a credible alternative capable of representing the interests of the people.

Meanwhile, Civil Intelligence Front Convener Sanjaya Mahawatta said a large number of political and civil society organizations had come together under the Joint Opposition platform. He claimed these groups represented genuine public concerns and sought to promote accountability and democratic values.

Mahawatta accused elements within the opposition of attempting to protect personal and political interests despite facing allegations of corruption, fraud and other misconduct. He stressed that the Joint Opposition would continue to support what it believes is right and oppose what it considers wrong, regardless of political affiliations.
