COLOMBO (News 1st) - The silence period for the upcoming local government elections is currently in effect.
Chairman of the Election Commission R.M.A.L. Ratnayake said all forms of candidate promotion and campaigning are strictly prohibited.
He confirmed that the transportation of ballot boxes to polling centers will commence tomorrow morning, with all necessary arrangements already in place.
This year’s elections will be conducted across 13,759 centers island-wide.
Over 70,000 candidates are contesting in the elections, which will determine representation in 339 local government institutions.
A total of 17,156,338 citizens are eligible to vote.
The Election Commission has also ensured that appropriate facilities are available for voters with special needs.
