Cyclonic Storm Fengal Moves Away: Death Toll From Adverse Weather Rises to 15

COLOMBO (News 1st) - According to the MET Department, the Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” over Southwest Bay of Bengal was located about 360 km north of Trincomalee and 280km Northeast of Kankasanthurai at 11.30 p.m. yesterday.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts as a cyclonic storm around 30th November, afternoon. 

Influence of this system on the island's weather is gradually reducing.

Skies will be cloudy and showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern province and in Trincomalee district. 

Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in Northern province.

Showers will occur at times in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy, Nuwara-eliya, Galle and Matara districts. 

Several spells of showers will occur in Western, North-western and North-central provinces. 

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places elsewhere of the island in the evening or night.

Strong winds of (50-55) kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central, North-western, Eastern, Central and Southern provinces.

The death toll from disasters caused by adverse weather has risen to 15, with 20 people injured and one person reported missing. 

The Disaster Management Centre reports that 475,000 individuals have been impacted across 232 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in 24 districts.

According to their latest update, 32,361 people are taking shelter in 266 safety camps.

101 houses have been completely damaged, while 2,591 houses remain partially damaged. 

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Navy has deployed 16 disaster relief teams across four districts to aid those affected by the adverse weather. 

Relief operations are focused on Ampara, Puttalam, and Anuradhapura districts.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Air Force announced that a Bell 212 helicopter has been deployed to retrieve A/L examination question papers sent to Examination centers in the Northern province.
