Dr. Jaishankar Affirms to Strengthen Indo-Lanka Bilateral Ties

COLOMBO (News 1st) - India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has conveyed India's strong commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation based on its "Neighbourhood First" policy and SAGAR outlook.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry issued a statement outlining the discussions that took place during the Minister's one-day visit to Sri Lanka.

In discussions with Foreign Minister Herath, Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, including a USD 61.5 million grant for the Kankesanthurai port modernization and gifting 22 diesel locomotives to Sri Lankan Railways.

They also discussed the potential conversion of USD 20 million in payments for completed Line of Credit projects into grants.

With President Anura Dissanayake, he highlighted ongoing initiatives in energy, digital infrastructure, and health, noting that India’s support is vital for Sri Lanka's economic prosperity. The President also mentioned the potential for exporting renewable energy to India.

On the topic of Sri Lanka's debt restructuring, EAM Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s early and ongoing support for the island nation's economic recovery, noting India's role as the first country to provide financing assurances that enabled the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility. He confirmed India's commitment to expediting its bilateral Memorandum of Understanding with Sri Lanka regarding debt management.

The EAM addressed concerns about Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lanka, advocating for their quick release and a humanitarian approach to livelihood issues. He also reiterated India’s support for Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring efforts.

Addressing the ethnic issue and reconciliation, Dr. Jaishankar voiced India's support for the aspirations of all Sri Lankan communities, including Tamils, for equality and justice, while advocating for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment of Sri Lanka's Constitution and the prompt holding of Provincial Council elections.

Dr. Jaishankar also extended an invitation from Prime Minister Modi for President Dissanayake to visit India, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration.
