2024 Presidential Election Voting Concludes with High Turnout Across Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st); The voting for the 2024 presidential election concluded today at 4 PM. According to district election officials, the counting of postal votes has already commenced.

Voting began at 7 AM today across 13,421 polling stations situated in 160 electoral divisions within 22 electoral districts. In most districts, voter turnout exceeded 70%.

A total of 17,140,354 individuals were eligible to vote in this election. 

In Colombo District, the voter turnout was 78%. The vote counting is taking place at Royal College and D.S. Senanayake College in Colombo.

Gampaha District, with the highest number of registered voters at 1,881,129, is conducting the vote counting at four centers.

In Kalutara District, voting took place at 735 polling stations starting from this morning. 

Vote counting began this afternoon at the National Institute of Education and Tissa National School. 

The voter turnout in Kalutara District exceeded 75%.

Kandy District had 1,191,399 registered voters who cast their votes at 890 polling stations. 

The counting is being conducted at four centers, as stated by District Returning Officer Chandana Tennakoon.

In Matale District, 330 polling stations were set up for voting. 

News 1st reporters indicate that ballot boxes are currently being transported to the counting centers. The voter turnout in Matale District exceeded 68%, according to District Returning Officer Tejani Tillakaratne.

In Nuwara Eliya District, voting took place at 534 polling stations. The counting is being conducted at Gamini Central College and the District Secretariat. The voter turnout percentage is yet to be confirmed.

In Galle District, 903,163 registered voters cast their votes at 715 polling stations. The counting is taking place at Southlands College and Aloysius College. The voter turnout percentage is yet to be confirmed.

In Matara District, ballot boxes have been transported to the counting center at Rahula College. Voting took place at 526 polling stations. The voter turnout percentage is yet to be confirmed.

In Hambantota District, 416 polling stations were established, and the ballot boxes have been transported to the counting centers. The voter turnout in Hambantota District was 78%.

In Jaffna District, 593,187 registered voters cast their votes at 619 polling stations. The counting is taking place at two centers.

In the Vanni electoral division, which includes the administrative districts of Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Mannar, voting took place at 387 polling stations. The Election Commission stated that counting is being conducted at five centers.

In Batticaloa District, ballot boxes were transported to the counting center at Hindu College after 4 PM today. Voting took place at 442 polling stations, with a voter turnout of 58%.

In Digamadulla, voting took place at 528 polling stations starting from this morning. Our reporter indicates that counting has begun at Hardy Technical College. The voter turnout was 74%.

In Trincomalee District, 315,925 registered voters cast their votes at 318 polling stations. The counting is being conducted at Vipulananda College. The voter turnout was 76%.

In Kurunegala District, 1,417,226 registered voters cast their votes at 977 polling stations. The counting is being conducted at five centers. 

In Puttalam District, counting is being conducted at three centers, and the ballot boxes have been transported to these locations.

Voting took place at 470 polling stations, with a voter turnout of 70%,.

In Anuradhapura District, voting took place at 636 polling stations, and the counting is being conducted at Anuradhapura Central College. The voter turnout was 75%.

In Polonnaruwa District, counting is being conducted at Royal College. The ballot boxes were transported to the center this afternoon. The voter turnout in Polonnaruwa District was 78%.

In Badulla District, voting took place at 530 polling stations starting from this morning. The counting is being conducted at three centers. 

In Monaragala District, 383 polling stations were established for voting. The counting is being conducted at Royal College. The voter turnout in Monaragala District was 80%.

In Ratnapura District, counting began this afternoon at three centers. Voting took place at 700 polling stations, with a voter turnout of 80%.

In Kegalle District, voting took place at 577 polling stations, and the counting is being conducted at Kegalle Girls' College and Swarna Jayanthi College. 

The voter turnout was approximately 75%.

In Monaragala District, the voter turnout was 80%.

In Polonnaruwa District, approximately 78% of voters cast their votes. The counting of postal votes is currently underway at all centers.

In Anuradhapura District, the voter turnout exceeded 75%, according to District Election Officer K.G.R. Wimalasuriya.
