President And PM Highlight Values Of Discipline and Compassion on Poson Full Moon Poya Day

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Today marks the sacred Poson Full Moon Poya Day, commemorating the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka and the enlightenment of the nation through the Buddha’s teachings.

Issuing a message, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said he is engaged in a broader effort to instill civility and discipline across all spheres of society, including Parliament and state institutions. 

The President emphasized that a nation cannot achieve genuine progress without an ethical foundation. 

Referring to the 'Chulla Hatthi Padôpama Sutta' preached by Arahat Mahinda Thero, he noted that the discourse underscores the importance of gradual training and disciplined development.

The President further called on all citizens to unite in building a modern and enlightened State founded upon the ethical, social and environmental values that our nation so urgently requires, while preserving the proud heritage and values bestowed upon the country through Buddhism.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, in her Poson message, said that embracing noble Buddhist values such as kindness, compassion, equality, discipline, and responsibility would help pave the way for a peaceful, just, and prosperous Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister noted that the country is embarking on a new journey filled with hope and emphasized that lasting success requires not only economic advancement but also a society enriched by strong moral and ethical values.
