COLOMBO (News 1st); President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his message on International Labour day, said that Sri Lanka’s working population is marking International Labour Day at a decisive moment, as the country continues to achieve significant economic progress despite a challenging global environment.
The President expressed the nation’s gratitude to workers for their contribution towards these achievements amid major recent challenges, including U.S. tariffs, Cyclone Ditwah, and conflicts in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, in her May Day message, stated that ensuring fair and equal access for all citizens remains a key objective of the government.
She emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to create an environment where every individual can pursue a dignified professional life.
The Prime Minister further noted that establishing a national social protection system that recognizes unpaid labour, and ensuring social security for such workers, are among the government’s top priorities.
