COLOMBO (News 1st); For years, clean drinking water was not a basic right for hundreds of families in rural Sri Lanka, it was a daily struggle, a distant hope, and a painful reminder of inequality.

Today, that long-standing hardship has been transformed into dignity, security, and renewed hope.

Through yet another impactful community-driven initiative by Gammadda, a life-changing solution has reached the people of Naegampaha village, in the Galnewa Divisional Secretariat of the Anuradhapura District.

A newly constructed Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Purification System at Naegama Sirisumana Vidyalaya was officially handed over to students today, granting safe, clean drinking water to an entire school and the surrounding community for the very first time.

The handover ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including Gammadda Leader Chevaan Daniel, Galnewa Divisional Secretary G.M.K.R. Priyadarshana, and Tambuttegama Zonal Director of Education Surangi Ammuduwage, along with community leaders, educators, and residents.

Their presence marked more than a ceremonial occasion, it symbolized a shared commitment to rural upliftment and sustainable development.

Naegama Sirisumana Vidyalaya provides education to nearly 165 students from Grade 1 to Grade 11, children full of dreams but long burdened by the lack of a basic necessity: clean water. The school sits at the heart of Naegampaha village, home to over 170 families who have endured contaminated water sources for decades.

For these families, clean drinking water was once a luxury. Today, it is finally within reach.

The new RO system will not only safeguard children’s health but also reduce waterborne diseases, improve school attendance, and uplift the overall quality of life in the community.

The foundation stone for this project was laid in memory of the late R. Rajamahendran, Founder of Gammadda and former Chairman of the Capital Maharaja Group, to commemorate his birthday.

It is a powerful tribute, one that turns remembrance into meaningful action. True to his vision, this project is not charity; it is empowerment.

Funded by the Gammadda Public Fund and constructed with the technical support of the Sri Lanka Navy, the project stands as living proof of what is possible when institutions, communities, and individuals unite for a common cause.

Every drop of water flowing from this system tells a story, of compassion, collaboration, and commitment to those often left behind.

This is not the end of a project. It is the beginning of healthier childhoods, stronger communities, and a future built on equal opportunity.

And with continued public support, it can be repeated, again, and again, and again.
