COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) is set to launch a special investigation into the country’s coal import operations covering the past five years.
COPE Chairman, MP Dr. Nishantha Samaraweera, announced that the inquiry will be conducted based on findings highlighted in audit reports, which have raised questions about the procedures followed in coal procurement during the period under review.
According to Dr. Samaraweera, the investigation will examine whether proper tender procedures were followed, whether those processes were transparent, and which entities were responsible for coordinating and facilitating coal importation during the past five years.
He further stated that both current and former officials of the institutions involved will be summoned before the COPE Committee to provide clarifications and respond to concerns arising from the audit findings.
