Death Sentences for 12 in Killing of Former MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala

COLOMBO (News 1st); Twelve people were sentenced to death today (11) in the case linked to the killing of former Polonnaruwa District MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer Jayantha Gunawardena, during unrest on May 9, 2022.

The orders were issued before the Gampaha High Court three‑judge bench, where proceedings in the case against 41 accused were taken up.

According to case records presented in court, the fatal incident occurred in Nittambuwa on the same day that the Aragalaya was taking place at Galle Face. An assault on the MP and his security officer in Nittambuwa resulted in both men losing their lives.

After a lengthy trial, the three‑judge bench fixed today for the delivery of the verdict, culminating in the sentencing of 12 individuals to death.
