Sri Lanka Calls China a ‘Trusted Friend’ at Chinese New Year Celebration in Colombo

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka reaffirmed its appreciation for China’s longstanding friendship and support, as Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath pointed out to the deep and evolving partnership between the two nations at the Chinese New Year reception held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Minister Herath praised China’s role during pivotal moments in Sri Lanka’s recent history and highlighted the broad spectrum of cooperation shaping the relationship today.

“China has been a valued and trusted friend to Sri Lanka, extending support during critical moments of our history and contributing significantly to our development efforts. Sri Lanka is grateful for the steadfast support extended by the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, including during the recent weather conditions that affected the entire country as well as continued cooperation for infrastructure development, trade, investment, tourism, education, and technological sectors.”

The Minister emphasized that Sri Lanka is entering a new chapter of economic recovery and sustainable development, and sees strengthened cooperation with China as a key element of that journey.

“As Sri Lanka moves forward on its path of economic growth and sustainable development, we look forward to further strengthening our ties with China in a manner that is mutually beneficial, transparent, and aligned with the aspirations of both our peoples.”

Herath also spoke extensively about the role of cultural diplomacy in bringing communities together, highlighting growing people-to-people connections between the two nations.

“Cultural ties such as today’s celebration play a significant role in bringing our people closer together. The growing interest in language, education, tourism, and cultural cooperation between Sri Lanka and China is a testament to the deepening ties and understanding between our societies.”

The reception, hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka, brought together a distinguished audience including former Presidents, Members of Parliament, diplomats, Tri‑Forces Commanders, embassy officials, and other specially invited guests.
