COLOMBO (News 1st): A 19‑year‑old youth who died after police opened fire on a van that allegedly defied orders to stop near the Alappiddy junction has tested positive for Ice and heroin, according to findings revealed at the post‑mortem examination.

The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of yesterday (10) when officers signaled a van to halt, but the driver reportedly ignored police orders and continued to speed away. Police fired in response, resulting in the death of the teenager.

Following the incident, two men who were inside the van, a 25‑year‑old from Nallur Vinaya Nagar Veediya and a 38‑year‑old resident of Siththankeani, were produced before the Kayts Magistrate’s Court. They were subsequently remanded until the 24th pending further investigations.

Both suspects were subjected to medical examinations, and results revealed that one of them had also used narcotics.

After the post‑mortem investigations were concluded, the deceased youth’s body was released to his family.

A search of the van, found with its back seats removed, led police to seize 17 grams of cannabis, along with a knife, a machete, and a rope.

Police stated that they are probing whether the same van was used in cattle thefts or other crimes in the area. The investigation is currently ongoing.
