COLOMBO (News 1st); A tip-off originating from an overseas intelligence source has triggered a major security investigation in Sri Lanka, after three rocket launchers, believed to be remnants from the wartime era, were discovered buried and hidden in the Kudumbimalai area of Walachchenai.
The Police Chief has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the case, following the recovery of the weapons over the weekend under highly suspicious circumstances.
According to security officials, the discovery began with a foreign intelligence alert indicating the possible presence of concealed military-grade weaponry in the eastern region.
Police said the rocket launchers had first been unearthed by an unidentified individual who had dug them out from a pit and concealed them again nearby.
Security officials confirmed that the weapons were identified as Swedish-manufactured 84mm RCL M2 rocket launchers.
Initial assessments suggest these launchers were buried in the LTTE’s former Sundar Base camp.
The CID has begun a wide-ranging probe under the direct orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
