COLOMBO (News1st): The 78th National Independence Day celebrations were held this morning, with grandeur and dignity at Independence Square, Colombo, presided over by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The ceremony was held under the theme "Rebuilding Sri Lanka"
The 78th Independence Day marks the liberation of the motherland after 133 years of British colonial rule, honoring the heroic warriors who fought fearlessly for independence.
Today's National Independence Day ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, the Speaker of Parliament, Ministers, diplomats, and other dignitaries.
The event commenced with the arrival of the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The ceremonial proceedings commenced with President Dissanayake hoisting the National Flag.
Subsequently, a Guard of Honor was presented to the President by members of the Tri-Forces.
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the fallen war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country, followed by the President’s Address to the Nation.
Thereafter, the Independence Day parade, featuring members of the Tri-Forces, the Police, the Special Task Force (STF), the National Cadet Corps, and the Civil Security Department, marched through the Independence Square premises followed by a vibrant cultural performance.
Ending the ceremony proceedings, the 78th National Independence Day celebrations concluded with the singing of the National Anthem in Tamil language.
