COLOMBO (News 1st) - The final rites of veteran writer, translator, and politician Dr. Harischandra Wijayathunga will be performed this evening at the Nelligahawatta Public Cemetery, Makola.
His remains are currently lying at the Makola Funeral Parlor for the public to pay their last respects.
Dr. Harischandra Wijayathunga, aged 94 at the time of his passing, was born in 1931 in Madamulla, Minuwangoda.
A prolific writer, he authored 31 books over the course of his distinguished career.
He founded the Sinhalaye Mahasammatha Bhoomiputhra Party and contested as its presidential candidate in the 1994 and 1999 elections.
In 2005, he introduced the Maha Sinhala Shabdakoshaya (Dictionary), an extensive work spanning more than 2,000 pages.
He was also widely recognized for his significant contributions to discussions on the letter standardization of the Sinhala language, earning him an esteemed place among Sri Lankan literary scholars.
