Health Minister Meets UNFPA Representative

COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa recently met with Phuntsho Wangyel, the recently appointed Officer-in-Charge (OiC) for the UNFPA Sri Lanka and Maldives Country Offices, to discuss the current state of the health sector, future plans, and key challenges.

Wangyel, who assumed duties on September 1, 2025, brings extensive experience in development planning, policy coordination, and analysis. 

During the meeting, the two parties exchanged views on strengthening maternal and child health services, improving access to medical equipment, and supporting the successful implementation of Sri Lanka’s National Health Policy.

The discussions also focused on knowledge sharing, enhancing sexual and reproductive health education, and reinforcing social protection measures.

Minister Jayatissa briefed Wangyel on the government’s ambitious plan to establish 1,000 primary healthcare centers across the island under the new health policy, aimed at ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration in achieving sustainable health outcomes and improving the well-being of Sri Lanka’s population.
