Ex-Moratuwa Mayor Released on Bail in Bribery Probe

COLOMBO (News 1st); Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (23)ordered the release of former Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando on bail, following his recent arrest by the Bribery Commission over allegations of financial misconduct.

Fernando was granted bail on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and three personal sureties of Rs. 1 million each. 

He had been remanded after being produced in court by the Bribery Commission.

The charges relate to alleged irregular payments made under the Moratuwa Municipal Council’s Urban and Rural Road Development Project. 

Authorities allege that Fernando authorized payments for 112 contracts in violation of financial regulations, resulting in losses to the state and undue benefit to associates.
