COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) says it has suspended the party membership of a former local government candidate allegedly involved in the ongoing investigation into a massive stockpile of chemicals allegedly used in methamphetamine production.

Party Spokesman Sanjeewa Edirimanna confirmed that the decision was taken immediately after the allegations surfaced.

“The SLPP will not, under any circumstances, protect or support anyone involved in such criminal activities,” he said.

Edirimanna accused the government of failing to ensure proper checks on the importation of the chemicals.

He further alleged that the scandal points to serious lapses in Customs clearance procedures, adding that the government must take full responsibility for allowing the containers to be released without adequate scrutiny.

The SLPP stressed that the individual in question contested the last local government election under its ticket but has now been suspended from all party activities.
