COLOMBO (News 1st); National People’s Power (NPP) parliamentarian Sunil Ratnasiri dismissed allegations of political revenge in connection with the recent discovery of massive chemical stockpiles linked to methamphetamine production.

Speaking to the media, Ratnasiri said the crackdown reflects the public mandate to hold wrongdoers accountable, not a political witch-hunt.

“The people told us not to let thieves roam free. That was part of the mandate we received,” Ratnasiri said, stressing that the chemicals used to produce crystal meth were imported in large containers, making it impossible for such operations to occur without high-level involvement.

“A former local council member alone cannot bring in such massive shipments. If these containers entered the country, there are bigger players above him—parliamentarians, cabinet ministers, even former presidents,” he alleged.

Ratnasiri drew parallels to past incidents involving underworld figures like Makandure Madush, noting that despite arrests, justice was elusive. “Now we see the same pattern. Crime bosses like Kehelbaddara Padme were brought back, and within 24 hours, the scale of their operations is becoming clear. These networks have been destroying this country for years,” he said.

He added that while in the past, politicians were often linked to drug cartels, “today, that situation does not exist,” signaling a shift in the government’s approach to organized crime.
