Smuggling Attempt Foiled: Ginger Hidden in Boat Engine Found in Kalpitiya

Colombo (News 1st); Kalpitiya Police have seized approximately 500 kilograms of suspected smuggled ginger hidden inside a suspicious boat anchored near the Kandakuliya beach. 

The discovery was made following a tip-off about two boats anchored in the deep sea under suspicious circumstances.

Acting swiftly, the Kalpitiya Police launched a special operation and ventured into the open sea using their own vessel.

During the mission, one of the suspect boats reportedly fled into deeper waters, evading capture. Meanwhile, individuals aboard the second boat managed to reach the Kandakuliya shore and subsequently escaped on foot.

Upon inspecting the abandoned vessel, police discovered several bags concealed within the boat’s engine compartment. 

These bags contained around 500 kilograms of ginger, believed to have been smuggled. Authorities estimate the street value of the seized ginger to be approximately Rs. 5 million.
