Negombo Drug Chase Ends in Police Shooting

COLOMBO (News 1st); A suspect has been injured following a police shooting near the Lellama Bridge in Dungalpitiya, Negombo, during a operation targeting drug transportation. 

The incident occurred when a motorcycle, allegedly involved in narcotics trafficking, failed to comply with police orders at a roadblock.

According to police, officers stationed at the checkpoint had received intelligence regarding drug movement in the area. 

When they signaled the motorcycle to stop, the riders ignored the command and attempted to flee. During the pursuit, the motorcycle collided with a lorry but continued to evade capture.

One of the riders was apprehended shortly after, while the second suspect continued to flee. Police allege that during the chase, the fleeing suspect attempted to fire at officers, prompting them to return fire. The suspect was subsequently injured and taken into custody.

He is currently receiving medical treatment at the Negombo Hospital.
