Parties Finalizing Candidates for Local Government Election, Discussions for Alliances Underway

COLOMBO (News 1st): The process of selecting candidates for the upcoming Local Government election is currently underway.

News 1st inquired with several major political parties regarding this.

The National People's Power says that the process of selecting candidates for the upcoming Local Government election is taking place these days.

Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, the General Secretary of the National People's Power, said that some individuals on the candidate list for the Local Government elections, which were originally scheduled for 2023, were elected as members of parliament in the Parliamentary election.

The process is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, said that interviews for the selection of Local Government candidates are still ongoing.

These processes too are expected to be completed soon.

The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam said that interviews for the selection of candidates in their party will begin within the next two weeks.

He added that the party has decided to contest the Local Government election under the "Pohottuwa" or flower bud symbol.

However, he also mentioned that discussions have begun with two other political parties to contest the Local Government election together.
