Former Minister's Brother Granted Bail in Fraud Case

COLOMBO (News 1st); Thisara Nanayakkara, who was in remand custody on charges of defrauding money by promising employment in Finland, was granted bail by the Gampaha Magistrate Court today.

The bail decision was made during his court appearance this morning.

Thisara Nanayakkara, the brother of former Minister of Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara, was arrested by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department on the 28th of last month. He was accused of defrauding 3 million rupees by falsely promising employment opportunities in Finland.

The case was heard today before Gampaha Magistrate Sillani Perera.

The Magistrate ordered his release on three surety bails of 10 million rupees each. The sureties, excluding his wife, must be close relatives.

Additionally, the Magistrate imposed a travel ban on Thisara Nanayakkara and his sureties.

The Magistrate also instructed that the bail conditions be fulfilled in open court.

Balapitiya Police informed the court today that another case has been filed against Thisara Nanayakkara for a 500,000 rupee foreign employment fraud.

As a result, the police requested permission from the Gampaha Magistrate Court to take him to the Balapitiya Magistrate Court.

The Gampaha Magistrate instructed that the suspect be presented in court on the nearest possible date to fulfill the bail conditions related to the first case.

Following this, Thisara Nanayakkara was taken back to the Mahara Prison.
