COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Power announced this afternoon that the implementation of the electricity tariff revision recommended by the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) will be carried out according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Finance.
The PUCSL has recommended a 20% reduction in electricity tariffs, effective from midnight tonight.
Earlier today, the PUCSL convened and made a final decision regarding the revision of electricity tariffs. The recommendations were announced at a press conference by the Commission's Director of Communications, Jayanath Herath.
"Within the domestic sector, the subcategory of 0 to 30 units consumption block will see a 29% decrease, the 31 to 60 unit range will have a 28% decrease, the 61 to 90 unit range will see a 19% decrease, and the 91 to 180 unit range will have an 18% decrease. For consumption above 180 units, there will still be a 19% decrease. The public sector will see an 11% decrease, the hotel sector a 31% decrease, the industrial sector a 31% decrease, the religious sector a 21% decrease, and street lighting will see an 11% decrease. Overall, there is a 20% decrease. For example, in the domestic sector, a current monthly bill of 280 rupees for 30 units will be reduced to 195 rupees, a 30% reduction. For 60 units, the bill will go from 700 rupees to 500 rupees, a 29% reduction," said Jayanath Herath, Director of Corporate Communications at PUCSL.
This afternoon, the Ministry of Power issued a statement regarding the matter. The Ministry indicated that the implementation of the PUCSL's recommendations will be carried out according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Finance, once the official recommendations are received.
