COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka says it will expand its investigations into online harassment targeting female politicians and political activists.
This move comes in light of a review by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
The Commission emphasized that Sri Lanka, as a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, holds the government accountable for preventing violence against women, including acts of online abuse.
The Commission has urged the government to take immediate action to address insults and inappropriate behavior targeting women on the internet, in line with the Women Empowerment Act passed last year.
