COLOMBO (News 1st): The number of reported dengue cases so far this year has exceeded 56,000.
The number of reported dengue deaths stands at 35.
Dr. Kapila Kannangara, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, stated that 21,556 dengue cases were reported in the month of June alone.
Meanwhile, the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo has been closed due to the dengue situation.
This follows about 30 students contracting the disease.
The University of the Visual and Performing Arts will remain closed until the 13th, and during this period, the university hostels will also be closed.
Professor Wasantha Liyanage, Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission, stated that the spread of dengue has also increased in the vicinity of university hostels located in Rajagiriya and Dehiwala.
Meanwhile, a three-day island-wide dengue mosquito control program commenced today.
This is being conducted under the direction of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
The operation center established to provide information regarding the prevention and control of dengue has received 207 complaints within a week.
Dr. Kapila Kannangara of the National Dengue Control Unit stated that the highest number of complaints received were regarding premises where water stagnates and mosquito larvae are present.
