Second Inmate Dies Following Tree Branch Collapse at Matara Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A second inmate injured by a falling tree branch at the Matara Prison has passed away this morning while receiving treatment at Matara General Hospital. 

The incident occurred when a branch from a tree fell onto a building housing inmates, causing significant damage and injuring 12 inmates.

The accident happened around 10:30 PM two days ago, and at the time, the building housed over 400 inmates. 

One inmate, a 34-year-old from Midigama, died on the night of the incident. 

Seven of the injured inmates have since been discharged from the hospital.

The Matara Prison has launched an investigation into the incident. 

According to Prison Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake, security around the prison has been increased with the assistance of the police, Special Task Force, and the military.

Additionally, 68 inmates who volunteered to be transferred were moved to the Angunakolapelessa Prison last night.
