One Inmate Dead, 11 Others Injured After Branch of Tree Falls on Building of Matara Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st); An inmate of the Matara prison has died due to an accident caused by a branch of a tree falling.

The Matara General Hospital says that 11 other inmates were injured in the incident, with two of them in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 10:30 PM yesterday when a branch of a tree fell onto a building where the inmates were being held.

Prison officials report that more than 40 inmates were inside the building at the time of the incident.

The deceased was a 34-year-old individual resident of Midigama, Matara.

Our News 1st correspondent says that officers of the Police Special Task Force, as well as the military, have been deployed for security at the prison.
