COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Supreme Court directed the Attorney General to submit to the court the report pertaining to the conspiracy to assassinate former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, retired Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera.

This directive came during the Court's consideration of a fundamental rights petition filed by Shani Abeysekera.

The petition was taken up before a bench consisting of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Vijith Malalgoda, and Justice Murdu Fernando.

President's Counsel Upul Jayasuriya representing Shani Abeysekera, presented evidence indicating that a report from the Police team of the National Authority for The Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses had disclosed a plot to kill his client through a staged car accident.

He emphasized that the current protective measures afforded to his client are inadequate given the nature of the threats.

At present, two police officers are assigned to guard Shani Abeysekera's residence, with an additional four officers assigned for his transportation. All six officers are on duty and armed.

President's Counsel Upul Jayasuriya argued that this level of protection is insufficient in light of the serious threats facing his client.

The petition will be heard again on August 29.
