COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has reiterated that the government's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of its citizens, rather than holding press conferences.

He made these remarks yesterday in Kalutara, addressing concerns about security in the Arugam Bay area.

The President pointed out that some individuals believe they can undermine the government by highlighting minor incidents. He assured that all necessary measures have been taken to protect the public based on prior intelligence.

"Our opposition is in a state of panic. They think they can bring down the government by highlighting minor incidents. When there was a threat of an attack, they immediately started holding press conferences. Why? Because they are happy. They think if something happens, the government will fall. Remember, we received information about this threat three to four weeks in advance. We meticulously planned to ensure the safety of tourists and the tourism industry, and we took final steps to apprehend those planning the attack. This is how a country is governed," President Dissanayake stated.

He further explained, "Then some ask, 'Why didn't you inform us about the threat?' The government is responsible for knowing about threats and protecting the people. That is the government's duty. Is it the government's duty to hold press conferences? No. The government's duty is to act on any information about potential disasters and prevent them. We have fulfilled these responsibilities properly. However, the opposition thinks they can use any small opportunity to bring down the government. This government is focused on building the country, not turning back."

President Dissanayake's remarks underscore the government's commitment to proactive measures and maintaining national security.
