X-Press Pearl disaster: Shipping company agrees to interim payment

COLOMBO (News 1st); The lawyers of the shipping company involved in the X-Press Pearl disaster have agreed to make an interim payment to Sri Lanka.

The Attorney General's Department said Sri Lanka was notified on Saturday (29) of the agreements reached during recent discussions in Singapore.

The relevant interim payment is to be made as compensation for the damage caused to the marine environment and for the fisherfolk affected by the disaster.

The Attorney General's Department said a detailed report related to the interim payment will be forwarded to the company's lawyers within the next two weeks.

Additionally, a summary report related to the total damage caused by the disaster will be sent to the lawyers within the next two weeks.

The report will be formulated by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA).
