Police Sergeant Killed, Sub-Inspector Injured in Weligama Shooting

A shooting early this morning in Palena, Weligama has left a police sergeant dead and a sub-inspector injured. 

The attack unfolded as a nine-officer unit responded to a tip-off and conducted a raid, only to be met with gunfire.

According to police reports, the group of officers came under unexpected fire upon entering the targeted location. 

A sergeant from the Dematagoda Police Special Crime Investigation Division tragically succumbed to his injuries. 

His colleague, a sub-inspector, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

Senior DIG in charge of the Southern Province has initiated a special investigation to probe the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
