COLOMBO (News 1st); Efforts to expand overseas employment opportunities for Sri Lankans took another step forward on Tuesday (27), as Sri Lanka and Türkiye explored ways to deepen cooperation on labour migration, skills development and worker welfare during high-level discussions in Ankara.
As part of an official visit to Türkiye, Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra met with Prof. Dr. Lütfihak Alpkan, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Security of Türkiye, for talks aimed at strengthening labour relations between the two countries.
The discussions focused on creating additional employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers while enhancing cooperation in skills development and training. Both sides also exchanged views on promoting ethical and transparent recruitment practices and ensuring the safety, dignity and well-being of Sri Lankans employed in Türkiye.
A key focus of the meeting was the protection of migrant workers' rights and improving working conditions for Sri Lankans seeking employment opportunities abroad. Discussions also explored ways to strengthen coordination between Sri Lanka and Türkiye in addressing concerns faced by migrant workers and ensuring greater support mechanisms for overseas employees.
Deputy Minister Hemachandra emphasized the importance of building a partnership that goes beyond employment numbers, placing equal importance on worker welfare and protection.
"Our objective is to build a stronger partnership that creates meaningful employment opportunities while ensuring that the rights, welfare and dignity of our people remain at the centre of our efforts," he said.
