Piyankara Jayaratne Corruption Case to Resume October 12

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Colombo High Court today scheduled the further hearing of another corruption case filed by the Bribery Commission against former Minister Piyankara Jayaratne, who is currently serving a prison sentence over corruption charges, for October 12. 

When the case was called today before Colombo High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela, prison officers produced the incarcerated accused, former Minister Piyankara Jayaratne, in open court. 

During the proceedings, the court granted permission for a request made by the Bribery Commission to include an officer involved in the relevant investigation as a witness in this case.

The Bribery Commission filed this case against the former minister on charges of committing "corruption" by causing a loss of Rs. 128,520 to the government through the unlawful printing of 3,000 Vesak greeting cards while serving as the Minister of Civil Aviation between May 10 and June 6, 2013.
