COLOMBO (News 1st); A team of surgeons at the Trincomalee District General Hospital has successfully removed a massive 3.1-kilogram bladder stone from a patient in what doctors believe could be a world-record medical achievement.
Medical experts involved in the procedure say the stone, weighing 3 kilograms and 100 grams, is believed to be the largest bladder stone ever removed through surgery and documented anywhere in the world.
The life-changing surgery was performed last Friday on a 52-year-old patient who had been receiving treatment at the Trincomalee District General Hospital.
The complex operation was carried out by a team of specialist doctors led by Consultant Urologist Dr. Pragaladhan Balakrishnan, who described the achievement as the result of a dedicated team effort.
Speaking following the successful procedure, Dr. Balakrishnan said initial examinations had revealed the presence of an unusually large bladder stone, prompting the patient to be referred to the specialist surgical team.
"This achievement is the result of a collective team effort. Initial examinations revealed that the patient had a massive bladder stone. The case was subsequently referred to our specialist team. Following all necessary surgical procedures, we successfully removed the stone from the patient's bladder. According to available records, it is the largest bladder stone ever documented and removed through surgery. The patient is currently in very good health," he said.
Hospital Director Dr. Sandamali Samarakoon commended the medical team for carrying out the highly challenging surgery successfully, highlighting the skill and dedication of the doctors and supporting staff involved.
"This surgery was successfully performed due to the expertise and dedication of our doctors. The medical team and hospital staff made the best possible use of the available resources to carry out this complex procedure.
