Flood Alert: Rapid Rise in Mahaweli, Kelani River Water Levels

COLOMBO (News 1st); Water levels in the Kelani and Mahaweli rivers are rising rapidly due to the prevailing heavy rainfall, the Irrigation Department has warned.

According to the Department, the Mahaweli River in the Nawalapitiya area and the Kelani River in the Kitulgala area have both reached major flood risk levels.

The Department further stated that water levels of the Kalu River are also continuing to rise in the Ratnapura area amid persistent rainfall.

The warnings come as heavy rains continue to batter several parts of the country, increasing the risks of flooding, landslides and other weather-related disasters.
