COLOMBO (News 1st) - A police curfew has been imposed in the area surrounding the Mahara Prison until further notice, according to Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sajeewa Medawatta.
The move follows a violent unrest that erupted inside the prison complex earlier today, leaving one inmate dead and six others hospitalized.
Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said police officers along with the Special Task Force were deployed to the location to restore order after tensions escalated among a group of inmates.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army personnel have been deployed to strengthen security around the prison premises, while a Bell-412 helicopter of the Sri Lanka Air Force has also been deployed for aerial surveillance of the area.
