‘My Work Is Done’: Keir Starmer Steps Down as UK Prime Minister

COLOMBO (News 1st); British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, declaring that his “work is done” as he prepared to meet King Charles III and formally bring his tenure as the United Kingdom’s leader to a close.

In a farewell address, Starmer reflected on what he described as a remarkable political journey that saw him lead the Labour Party from its historic defeat in 2019 to a landslide election victory in 2024, before serving as Prime Minister during a period of significant political and economic change.

Starmer said it had been the privilege of his life to serve Britain and expressed confidence that the country is now stronger and fairer than it was when he entered Downing Street two years ago.

Highlighting the achievements of his government, he pointed to a stronger economy, improvements in public services, a significant reduction in healthcare waiting times, progress in reducing child poverty, lower immigration levels and strengthened defence and national security.

He also said Britain’s international standing had been significantly enhanced during his time in office.

Despite citing policy achievements, Starmer said the most humbling aspect of being Prime Minister was witnessing the everyday acts of service, resilience and compassion demonstrated by ordinary citizens across the country.

He paid tribute to members of the armed forces, National Health Service workers, volunteers and community leaders, praising their dedication and commitment to serving others.

The outgoing Prime Minister also warned that Britain faces a world in which adversaries seek to exploit divisions within democratic societies. He said the country’s values, freedoms and unwavering support for Ukraine have made it a target for those seeking to undermine unity and democratic institutions.

Starmer stressed that it is vital for the nation to remember its strengths and maintain confidence in its ability to overcome challenges. He said Britain’s history, character and shared values provide a strong foundation for future progress.

He expressed hope that the country can continue building a society in which every child has the opportunity to fulfil their potential and succeed regardless of their background.

Calling for national unity, Starmer urged citizens not to succumb to division and emphasized the importance of bringing people together under a common purpose and shared identity.

As he formally passed leadership responsibilities to Andy Burnham, Starmer offered his full support to his successor and wished him every success as the country enters a new political chapter.

The departing Prime Minister also thanked his wife, their children, his staff, colleagues across the Labour Party, civil servants and everyone who supported his administration throughout its time in office.

He emphasized that political achievements are never the result of one individual alone, describing politics as a team effort and crediting those who worked alongside him for the changes delivered during his leadership.

Starmer thanked the British people for the opportunity to serve as Prime Minister and said he was leaving office with gratitude, pride and optimism.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile, and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” he said.
