COLOMBO (News 1st); Keir Starmer has officially stepped down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after formally tendering his resignation to King Charles III, bringing his time in office to a close.
The announcement was confirmed by Buckingham Palace following an audience between the King and the outgoing Prime Minister on Monday morning.
According to an official Palace statement, Sir Keir Starmer submitted his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which was accepted by King Charles.
“Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept,” the statement said.
Buckingham Palace also confirmed that Lady Starmer was received by the King during the visit.
Starmer’s resignation marks the formal end of a premiership that began after Labour’s landslide general election victory in 2024. Earlier in the day, he delivered a farewell address outside 10 Downing Street, describing it as the “privilege of my life” to serve the British people and declaring that his “work is done.”
The resignation also paves the way for Labour leader Andy Burnham to be invited by King Charles III to form a new government and become Britain’s next Prime Minister.
